Ford launching socially networked car safety initiative

V2V Ford launching socially networked car safety initiativeFord is partnering with St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Russia to assess the most effective way to achieve vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2X) communications using robots in space. This project experiments with multiple wireless network links on mission control techniques to apply the lessons learned for next generation connected cars.

Chief Technical Officer and Vice President of Ford research and innovation Paul Mascarenas said “Their participation in this research can aid in the development of next-generation Ford driver-assist technologies”. These technologies will globally benefit Ford customers, other road users, and the environment (Parker, 2013). The development of connected vehicle communications has the potential to reduce traffic congestions and accidents by alerting the driver with a message/alert response to the forthcoming crash or collision.

 Telematics transmits long-distance digital information developed for the use on space station, provides excellent potential for deployment of future vehicle-to-cloud, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-vehicle and other forms of communication (Parker, 2013). In case of an emergency, for example, if an accident were to cause vehicle-to-cloud communications to break down, a vehicle might still have access to a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications network, enabling an emergency message to be sent via V2V to a nearby vehicle and then between vehicles and infrastructures until it reached emergency services providers.
